In a video for SUNews, Duncan Brown, Charles Brightman Endowed Professor of Physics, explains the discovery of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger. LIGO researchers and their collaborators have confirmed that neutron star collisions are a source of gold, platinum, and r-process elements. "This is science in action," says Brown. "The astronomy textbooks of tomorrow, both at the high school evel, the middle school level, and at the college level, are going to be different than they were last year."
